EIC Pathfinder Open 2026: EU Funding for Breakthrough Deep-Tech Innovation
The EIC Pathfinder Open 2026 is one of the most exciting funding opportunities in the European Union’s innovation landscape. Part of the European Innovation Council under Horizon Europe, it supports early-stage research aimed at developing radically new technologies with transformative potential.

The programme welcomes visionary ideas that could create entirely new technological pathways across fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, advanced materials, quantum technologies, and energy systems. With an indicative budget of €166 million, it provides substantial support to multidisciplinary teams willing to pursue high-risk, high-impact research.
Pathfinder so far: A snapshot
Since its launch, Pathfinder has funded numerous projects with transformative potential:
Number of projects funded: 400+
Total investment: €700M+
Fields covered: AI, quantum technologies, biotechnology, energy, advanced materials, and more
Impact: Many projects have advanced from early scientific proof-of-concept to industrial collaborations and investor interest

The new opportunity: EIC Pathfinder Open 2026
Unlike other EU funding schemes, Pathfinder Open is fully open in scope, allowing proposals from any scientific or technological field. Projects typically focus on low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 1–4), aiming to demonstrate the scientific feasibility of breakthrough concepts.
Selected projects can receive up to €4 million, covering 100% of eligible costs under the lump-sum funding model. Beyond financial support, teams gain access to the EIC ecosystem, including business acceleration services, networking opportunities, and connections with investors and innovation partners, helping bridge the gap between research and market applications.
Applications must come from international consortia of at least three independent organisations from different EU Member States or associated countries, including universities, research centres, SMEs, start-ups, and industrial partners. Interdisciplinary collaboration is key to tackling complex scientific challenges and unlocking new technological possibilities.
The submission deadline for 2026 is 12 May 2026, 17:00 Brussels time. Successful proposals combine a bold technological vision, strong scientific foundations, and a well-structured consortium.
This is a unique chance for research teams, SMEs, start-ups, and industrial partners to turn high-risk, high-gain concepts into breakthrough technologies, supported by EIC’s ecosystem, including acceleration services, networking, and access to investors.
